Maundy Thursday – A Day of Love and Service

The faithful gathered today to solemnly celebrate Maundy Thursday, marking the beginning of the Sacred Triduum. The liturgy commemorated the Last Supper of Jesus with His disciples, a powerful reminder of love, humility, and service.

The celebration began with a reverent Holy Mass, Rev. Fr Andrew Dsouza, Parish Priest was the main celebrant of the Holy Eucharist, concelebrated by Rev. Fr Jesudas Dcosta, Spiritual Director, St John Paul II Shrine; Rev. Fr Kevin Dsouza, Director & Rev. Fr Francis Dsouza, Spiritual Director, Kripa Sadhana Minor Seminary, Bajpe. During the mass, the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood was remembered. The Gospel reading reflected the moment when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, teaching them the importance of humility and selfless service. Following, the symbolic washing of the feet was performed, which involved the washing of the feet of 12 parishioners, reminding everyone to serve one another with love and compassion.

In his homily, Fr Andrew reflected on the greatest gift Jesus left for us—the Holy Eucharist, His precious body, present with us now and forever. On the occasion of Priests’ Day, he emphasized that priests come from families and encouraged parishioners to nurture devout children who may one day answer God’s call to shepherd His flock. The faithful were invited to renew their commitment to love, forgive, and serve, following Christ’s example.

The congregation actively participated through prayers, hymns, and reflection, with the altar beautifully prepared for the sacred celebration.

After the Holy Mass, the Blessed Sacrament was taken in a solemn procession to the place of repose; the altar servers led the procession with candles, while hymns of adoration filled the church, creating an atmosphere of devotion and gratitude. The Blessed Sacrament, carried with great reverence, was placed at the prepared altar of repose, beautifully decorated to symbolise the Garden of Gethsemane.

Parishioners then spent time in adoration, recalling Jesus’ words to His disciples, “Stay here and keep watch with me.” This sacred time encouraged everyone to meditate on Christ’s love, sacrifice, and His call to remain faithful in prayer. The adoration concluded in quiet reflection, inviting the faithful to continue their spiritual journey through the solemn events of the Passion.

Maundy Thursday reminds us that true greatness lies in serving others. As we enter into the solemn days ahead, may we carry forward the message of love, humility, and sacrifice in our daily lives.
